STUDIO
PAINTINGS
Most of my paintings begin from candid photos which I take in museums, parks, and the like. Others are inspired by my own or others' family photos.
Each work is sketched and then painted onto 400lb Arches watercolor paper, beginning with the figures. Small watercolor strokes are painstakingly layered over the previous, giving my subjects realism and depth. Using gouache (an opaque watercolor), I then paint the backgrounds around the completed watercolor figures. By leaving the backgrounds flat and somewhat under-developed, focus is drawn to the figures which invites the viewer to complete the story. Each piece is entirely painted by hand, employing no computer or other means of artificial manipulation
Commissioned paintings of family and friends are welcome, and make exceptional gifts.
CERAMICS
My one-of-a-kind mosaics are wet-cut from red earthenware, then carefully sculpted and smoothed. After bisque firing, each piece is glazed with non-commercial formulas and fired again. Each mosaic component is then re-assembled and mounted onto cement backer-board or wood, and then grouted. A specially designed ceramic border or wooden frame complements each ready to hang work.
In addition to my mosaics, I'm now designing a line of art tiles! Check back often for new additions.
Feel free to contact me regarding a special request for a custom-designed piece.
